  • Psychotherapists and counselors often do similar work. Both use talk therapy to help people work through emotional difficulties, though their training may differ.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, manage treatment, and sometimes provide therapy.

Psychologists have advanced training in psychology and work in settings such as schools, hospitals, care homes, prisons, and private practice. They help people understand behavior and address psychological distress. One simple way to think about it is that psychology is the study of the mind, while psychotherapy applies those insights to help people heal and grow.

Therapy Process

  • One-to-one sessions are typically 50 minutes long but can be up to an hour.

  • Most often, clients see their therapist once a week at the same time each week. However, sessions may be more or less frequent depending on your needs, what you and your therapist agree on, and how your therapist works.

  • Psychotherapy can be short-term or long-term. Some people attend therapy for 3 to 12 sessions, while others continue for a year or longer.

The number of sessions will depend on you, your therapist, the type of therapy, and the depth and complexity of the issues you want to work on. It is unusual for therapy to last fewer than six sessions.

  • Your therapist will listen and ask thoughtful questions, but they will not tell you what to do. Therapy is a collaborative process designed to help you explore your experiences and develop insight into your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

Sometimes simply talking through your concerns can help you see them in a new light and consider ideas you may not have thought about before.

  • Yes. A psychotherapist will keep what you say confidential and should explain the legal and ethical limits of confidentiality.
